How Cosmetic Dental Bonding Can Fix Chipped Teeth

Many people think that teeth whitening and more invasive procedures are the only way to fix a tooth but luckily dental bonding can help so many people!

What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored resin that is bonded to the tooth. It helps to repair minor chips and cracks and has an amazing effect on the overall smile.

What is the difference between a dental bonding treatment and veneers?

The process of getting veneers is a bit more involved and requires a person to have an imprint made of their teeth and sent to a lab for the veneers to be made. Bonding can be done in one session. Veneers cover the entire tooth while bonding just uses small pieces of the material to bond to the tooth. Once it bonds securely, the dentist will shape and buff the material, so it incorporates with the rest of the teeth in a near-seamless manner.

When is dental bonding used?

There are many ways that dental bonding can help a smile. Some of the many uses include:

  • Change tooth shape
  • Repair teeth that are decaying
  • Makes teeth look longer
  • Repair chips and cracks in teeth
  • Protect a portion of tooth’s root that has been exposed
  • Improve color of the tooth
  • Close spaces between teeth

How does it work?

Once a shade is selected, the resin is made to match that color in order to blend naturally with the rest of your teeth. If the bonding is used to also repair a cavity, then mild anesthesia will be used, but it is generally not necessary.

After roughening the surface and applying a conditioning liquid, the bonding material is placed on the teeth. Once it is smoothed and shaped, a high-intensity light is used to harden it. The process generally takes 30 – 60 minutes and looks amazing when done!
